Joint Injections in Singapore: What Patients Should Know

06 April 2026

BY: Peak Medical

Summary:
  • Joint injections are typically used to manage joint pain when conservative treatments don’t provide sufficient relief.
  • Different types of injections serve different purposes — some reduce inflammation, while others aim to improve joint lubrication or support healing.
  • Joint injections are commonly considered for conditions such as osteoarthritis, tendon inflammation or joint injuries.
  • You should see a doctor to determine whether injections are appropriate for your specific condition.

Joint pain can affect a range of daily activities — from walking and climbing stairs to simple tasks like gripping objects. In Singapore, joint injections are sometimes used as part of management for joint pain and functional concerns

However, not all joint pain requires injections and not all injections work in the same way. Understanding when they are used, what they do and their limitations can help you make more informed decisions about your care.

To help you, we’ve prepared this guide!

Why Joint Pain Is Sometimes Hard to Treat

Joint pain can arise from a range of causes, including wear and tear, inflammation, injury, or underlying medical conditions. In many cases, more than one factor is involved.

For example, osteoarthritis involves gradual cartilage breakdown, while tendon-related pain may stem from overuse and strain. These conditions can respond differently to treatment, which is why a single approach does not work for everyone.

It should be noted, too, that joints are complex structures made up of cartilage, ligaments, tendons, and surrounding tissues. Pain may not always originate from the same source, so diagnosis and treatment need to be nuanced.

What Are Joint Injections?

Joint injections involve delivering medication into or around a joint as part of the management of pain and inflammation.

Where Do They Fit Into Joint Pain Care?

Injections are typically considered after initial treatments such as rest, physiotherapy or oral medications have been tried and found wanting. They may be used in the management of:

  • Inflammation
  • Joint mobility concerns
  • Pain symptoms

They are often part of a broader treatment plan rather than a standalone solution. Depending on your exact condition, injections may be used alongside rehabilitation exercises or lifestyle modifications.

Types of Joint Injections Available in Singapore

Different types of joint injections are used depending on the underlying cause of your pain and your overall health.

Anti-Inflammatory Injections (Steroids)

Corticosteroid injections are commonly used to reduce inflammation within the joint. They may help relieve pain associated with conditions such as arthritis or tendon inflammation.

Relief can vary. Some patients experience improvement within days, while others see improvements more gradually. The duration of relief also differs and doctors usually space out repeated injections to reduce potential side effects.

Lubricating Injections (Hyaluronic Acid)

Hyaluronic acid injections are used to improve joint lubrication, particularly in joints affected by osteoarthritis. Hyaluronic acid is a substance that is naturally found in joint fluid and helps reduce friction during movement.

These injections may be considered for knee osteoarthritis, although responses can vary between individuals.

Blood-Based Injections (PRP)

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections contain components derived from the patient’s own blood. These components contain growth factors that may support tissue repair.

PRP is sometimes considered for tendon or ligament-related conditions. However, evidence on its effectiveness varies. Owing to the poor cost-to-benefit ratio, we do not provide PRP injections at Peak Medical. We prioritise the other above injections.

Conditions Where Injections May Be Considered

Joint injections may be considered for a range of musculoskeletal conditions, including:

  • Osteoarthritis (particularly of the knee, shoulder, or hip)
  • Tendon inflammation (such as tendinitis)
  • Bursitis (inflammation of fluid-filled sacs around joints)
  • Certain sports-related injuries

You should speak to a doctor, though, to be sure your condition applies. At Peak Medical, we’ll make sure to do a thorough check before recommending any treatment. Make an appointment with us today!

What to Expect Before, During, and After a Joint Injection in Singapore

Before the procedure, your doctor will typically assess your condition and may recommend imaging tests such as X-rays or ultrasound to guide treatment.

During the injection:

  • The area is cleaned to reduce infection risk
  • A local anaesthetic may be used
  • The medication is injected into or around the joint

The procedure is usually completed within a short period.

After the injection, patients are often advised to:

  • Rest the joint for a short period
  • Avoid strenuous activity for one to two days
  • Monitor for any unusual symptoms

What Injections Do Not Do

While joint injections can help manage symptoms, they are not a cure for underlying structural issues.

Note:

  • They do not reverse cartilage loss in osteoarthritis
  • They may not address biomechanical problems contributing to joint stress
  • Their effects are often temporary

This is why injections are usually combined with other approaches such as physiotherapy, exercise programmes, or weight management strategies where appropriate.

Risks and Side Effects to Be Aware Of

Joint injections are generally considered safe when performed by trained medical professionals, but like all medical procedures, they carry some risks.

Possible side effects include:

  • Temporary pain or swelling at the injection site
  • Infection (rare but possible)
  • Skin changes or thinning with repeated steroid use
  • Short-term increase in blood sugar levels in some patients

The likelihood of these risks varies depending on the type of injection and individual health factors. You are also less likely to be affected if you consult a professional with years of experience in joint injections. Our doctors at Peak Medical Clinic & Surgery are ready to help you weigh the potential benefits against any risks or concerns you have.
